It All Started With an Idea in the Shower

From a Shower Idea to the Last 10 Feet

The Yummy Box began inside FoodGarage in 2014 with an idea Dommonic Nelson had in the shower: create secure, technology-enabled compartments that could protect meals inside shared workplace environments. The original concept was a high-tech community refrigerator designed to address workplace lunch theft.

After graduating from Texas Southern University, Dommonic invested approximately $13,000 from his Walmart 401(k), sold his sports car, moved back in with his grandfather and began protecting the idea through patents and trademarks. Without a traditional technology background, he studied programming, psychology, product development, manufacturing, branding and business strategy while assembling the people and knowledge required to bring the concept to life.

The breakthrough came in 2017. After experiencing a frustrating online-order pickup and receiving a defining challenge from Michael Feinberg of Make Me a Millionaire Inventor, the opportunity became clear: do not focus on building another locker. Build the technology that could improve the restaurant handoff.

That insight shifted the concept from workplace food storage to restaurant pickup. Digital ordering was growing, but customers and delivery drivers were still arriving at crowded counters, waiting for employees, searching exposed shelves and relying on manual verification. The transaction had moved online. The final handoff had not.

Following years of research and development, the first production system entered a 154-day restaurant beta in 2019. The Yummy Box then began its commercial soft launch in April 2020 as restaurants everywhere were forced to rethink off-premise fulfillment.

What began as an idea in the shower became patented, AI-powered pickup infrastructure refined through more than six years of live restaurant operations, over 42,000 automated pickups and deployments across Texas, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

The Technology Continued to Learn.

Every deployment exposed another opportunity to improve the handoff.

The system evolved from secure pickup hardware into connected infrastructure with touchscreen verification, cloud-based applications, smart-lock access, SMS notifications, diagnostics, reporting and portfolio-level visibility.

The station changed because restaurant operations taught us what the technology needed to become.

Who We Are

Our Mission

To standardize the final 10 feet of off-premise restaurant operations with verified, intelligent pickup infrastructure that protects margin, reduces counter congestion and gives teams control of every handoff.

We believe pickup should be managed with the same precision as dine-in operations.

Our Home

Houston, Texas

Designed and deployed in Houston. Built for national rollout.

Our Team

The Yummy Box is led by founder and inventor Dommonic Nelson and supported by professionals across strategy, operations, software, engineering, manufacturing and restaurant deployment.

The system has also been shaped by the restaurant operators and frontline teams who have used it in live service.
